EDP, EDT & EDC Explained: What’s the Difference in Perfume Types?

If you’ve ever shopped for fragrances, you’ve probably noticed the words Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, or Eau de Cologne on the bottles. At first, they might feel like fancy French terms — but really, they describe how concentrated the fragrance is, and how long it will last on your skin.

Here’s a simple breakdown to help you choose the right one.

Eau de Parfum (EDP)

Eau de Parfum usually contains 15–20% perfume oils, which makes it the richest and longest-lasting option. You can expect it to stay on your skin for 6–8 hours, sometimes even longer on clothes.

It’s the kind of fragrance you’d wear for special occasions, night outs, or anytime you want your scent to truly linger. Since it’s more concentrated, a little goes a long way.

Eau de Toilette has a lighter concentration — around 5–15% perfume oils. It typically lasts 3–5 hours and feels fresher on the skin.

This makes EDT perfect for everyday wear, office hours, or casual outings. It’s noticeable but never too heavy, making it a versatile choice for daily life.

Eau de Cologne (EDC)

Eau de Cologne is the lightest of the three, with just 2–5% perfume oils. It usually lasts 1–2 hours, which makes it more of a refreshing splash than a long-lasting scent.

You’ll often find EDC in citrusy, crisp, and energetic fragrances. It’s great for hot weather, post-workout, or anytime you want a quick refresh.

Which One Should You Choose?

It depends on your lifestyle:

Eau de Parfum → long-lasting, bold, perfect for nights or important moments.

Eau de Toilette → lighter, easy to wear daily, great for work and daytime.

Eau de Cologne → subtle, refreshing, best for short wear or hot days.

At the end of the day, fragrance is personal. The best way to know is to try it on your skin and see how it makes you feel.
